Acne Scars and Facelifts

Unfortunately, acne is a very common issue. Depending on the intensity and duration of your acne, you may end up with scarring that can affect facelift results. At our Loveland plastic surgery office, we understand the pain that acne and its scars can cause. That is why we encourage you to make an appointment with us to discuss your options!

In this blog, we will discuss how acne scars can affect facelifts, and what can be done about them.

When you get repeated or overlapping acne outbreaks in one area, the skin has no chance to heal. It becomes overwhelmed with your body’s white blood cells, which end up breaking down the delicate framework of your skin as they fight the infection. Oftentimes, the body cannot keep up with the damage, and has to use scar tissue. The scar tissue’s collagen fibers are densely packed and generally go in one direction. The tissue is practically impermeable to all other cell types, which makes it difficult for the body to replace.

Acne scars tend to get more visible with age, because the skin loses its elasticity. Facelifts tighten the skin, which can reduce the scars’ appearance. At the end of the day, if you are targeting acne scars, a facelift is not the ultimate solution. However, if you want to reverse gravity’s work on your face, reduction of acne scar visibility is a benefit that your facelift will give you.

So if you have acne scars, what can be done to eliminate or reduce them? The best thing you can do is make an appointment to talk with our Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Schutte. Contact our office today!
