If you are reading this and you think you are too young for plastic surgery, that doesn’t mean you are too young to take care of your skin. Take care of it now, and you’ll be very happy you did later on.

Stay Out of the Sun

Limiting exposure to midday sun, and always wearing a moisturizing sunscreen are two of the best things you can do for your skin, no matter what your age. If you have had a facelift, or are considering plastic surgery, it is important to remember that staying out of the sun and wearing sunscreen are going to remain very important to your post-surgery routine. You don’t get a pass just because you’ve had surgery.

Properly Clean Your Skin

Use a gentle cleanser every night and every morning. Follow it up with a moisturizer that is well suited for your skin type. You’ll want to use an eye serum as well. The skin around your eyes is more sensitive and deserves special treatment. If you aren’t sure what to use on your skin, get the help of of a professional esthetician that you trust. Or, give us a call. We are happy to make recommendations.

Be Gentle

As you age, your skin changes dramatically. Thanks to everything from changing hormone levels to gravity, there’s no way to avoid these changes. You can take steps to make sure you don’t make them worse though. Make sure that you are using products that are age appropriate. The thick moisturizer you used in your 30s or 40s is probably not going to be appropriate in your 50s or 60s. Your skin gets thinner, drier and much more sensitive as you age. Again, if you aren’t sure what to do, give us a call. We’re here to help.

You can’t reverse some signs of time with anything other than surgery. So, if you are in your 50s or 60s and are frustrated that your routine isn’t giving you the results you want, it might be time for you to consider plastic surgery or other medical intervention. The field of plastic surgery has advanced a lot in the past decade, and you may be surprised by what can be accomplished and how quickly you can heal from many procedures. If it is on your mind, come in for a consultation. It can’t hurt to get all of the facts.

Don’t Smoke

We wish we didn’t have to say it, but we are always surprised by how many people don’t realize that smoking prematurely ages skin. If you are considering surgery, we strongly recommend that you stop smoking first. In addition to improving your overall health, as a non smoker you’ll likely heal faster and have better, longer-lasting surgical results.

Post Surgery Care

If you’ve had a facelift or other plastic surgery, properly caring for your skin becomes even more important. Follow these recommendations for the long-term, overall health of your skin.

Be Even More Gentle

Make sure you are using hypoallergenic, gentle products. Stay away from products with added fragrances or soap-based cleansers. Follow the cleansing recommendations of your surgeon.

Be More Sun Aware

It is critical for the months following surgery that you stay out of the sun. But don’t take your new look for granted. Make sure you’ve got a multi-spectrum sunscreen on every single day. And please, stay out of direct sun between 11am and 3pm whenever possible.

Go Sparingly on Makeup

Be certain that your surgical wounds have completely healed before using makeup. Once you start wearing makeup again, use the gentlest formulas you can find. Look for gentler mineral-based options. And be sure to remove all of your makeup as part of your evening cleansing and moisturizing routine. This is especially important after surgery.

Whatever your age, and whether or not you opt for plastic surgery, taking care of your skin is important. After all, it is the only skin you’ve got. If you are considering a facelift or other procedure, please give us a call to schedule a consultation. We’ll assess your skin, listen to what your goals are, and make honest and thoughtful recommendations about what we think will get you the best possible results. We look forward to meeting you.
